A trip through 45 hectares of Sicilian vineyards, from Corleone, in the province of Palermo, to Chiaramonte Gulfi, near Ragusa and Linguaglossa on Mount Etna.

Three territories whose history is linked to a wine that expresses a particular Sicilian style. This is the trip of the Vivera family, that has been cultivating, throughout generations, the passion for vines but just recently has decided to bottle with its own label. “The first harvest we bottled was in 2008”, explained Irene Vaccaro, responsible for the cellar, who presented the company wines at the 2010 edition of Avvinando, “and each wine tells the story of those who produce it”. And in the same way everyone in the company likes to tell something about his territory. “Mamma Armida” is from Corleone. According to her, “there is no other place in the world so beautiful, an unknown and hidden beauty, that my husband and I wanted to convey in the wines we produce”, she explained, “that can tell a different story of Sicily through the language of tastes and flavours”.

Here the vineyards are located in Muranna, Dagala and Casalotto, on a clay hill near the Belice river. An important part of the 45 hectares, all owned by the family and cultivated with organic methods, is located in Chiaramonte Gulfi, where Antonio was born. A territory where the countryside is characterized by fences of white stone called “chiuse a carrubbo”, because of the great carob trees under which the animals rest. A landscape that inspired paintings by Piero Guccione and other painters of the Scicli school and that attracts many tourists, thanks also to the success of the TV series Il Commissario Montalbano, by Andrea Camilleri. Finally in the province of Catania Omar, Eugenio and Loredana were born and are growing up. “Etna knows our story”, explained Antonino Vivera, “it saw my family build this cellar which can hardly be seen by passers-by, so that they still continue looking to the landscape”.

A rich landscape composed of nature and history, protected by a park that starts from the top of the volcano down to the small villages, where the cultivation stops at one hundred metres. The only place, the volcano, from where you can see the sea while you’re skiing. Here there is the Martinella vineyard, where a particular type of Nerello Cappuccio is produced, blending it with the Cabernet Sauvignon from Casalotto, near Corleone. These places produce four different wines, three whites, amongst which the Etna doc obtained from a selection of Carricante grapes, and a red wine.
