A Norman castle, ancient walls that enclose a network of streets and churches that remind other times. This is Erice, a town built on a rock that over-looks the city of Trapani. A quiet medieval village, characterized by surrounding walls and narrow streets, artisans shops and churches, the Cattedrale della Matrice, the castle, the garden and a breath-taking view of the salt mines of Trapani and the Egadi islands.
A town with an old tradition of carpets and pottery, Erice managed to maintain tradition but also opened towards the new with the Foundation and Scientific Cultural Centre Ettore Majorana, with 118 post-university schools.
15 minutes away from all this there is the wine company Fazio, a Sicilian cellar which has just come back from the 12th Vinitaly and has been telling about its territory with its wine. A strategy in which the family strongly believes, participating in an active way with the promotion of the Doc Erice and the Strada del Vino. “Our production is focused on native vines like Inzolia, Grillo, Catarratto and Nero D’Avola, which we try to improve from a qualitative point of view. We also worked on international vines such as the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot, the Shiraz and the Muller Thurgau, but also on aromatic vines such as the Moscato for the production of passito and spumante that also satisfied our expectations”.
Our strength is obviously our team, led by Girolamo and Vincenzo Fazio, Lilly Ferro, Roberta Zaccarini and Giacomo Ansaldi. But also the position, the climate and the soil on which the vineyards are grown: 100 hectares on hills between 250 and 500 metres above sea level. “The altitude, the northern winds, the sea breeze, the chalky and clay soil, are very important elements”, they explained from the cellar “that allow the plants to develop their qualities and maintain the components of the grapes”.
The export department of the company is managed by Lilly Fazio, regional delegate of the association Donne del vino. “I don’t like talking about men or women of wine, it’s as if we want to underline differences instead of eliminating them”, she explained, “but it’s without doubt that the wine production of the island is being managed more and more by women, both in public relations and from a technical point of view. In fact the number of female oenologists is constantly increasing.
