Piccirè, the new sweet Syrah that the Fatascià cellar from Balestrate (Palermo), will launch at Vinitaly 2010, was born. “It comes from a late harvest of 2007, fermenting in the barrels that we will take to Verona to test the public’s and experts’ opinion”, explained Stefania Lena, who runs the company together with her husband Giuseppe Natoli, and Riccardo Cotarella, international oenologist. While Elirè was dedicated to their first daughter, this new wine was dedicated to the second one, who was born two weeks ago.
So the company continues the tradition of red wine, but this time they did not use the Nero D’Avola, employed for many experiments since 2000, but Syrah. The company owner, the oenologist and the agronomist preferred Syrah to Nero D’Avola because with the late harvest it managed to give a more fruity smell and an excellent structure”. The vineyards from where the grapes come from are located between San Giuseppe Jato and San Cipirello, an area which is strongly devoted to the production of top-quality wines.
We are in the Jato Valley, where many excursionists and naturalists come, where you can be fascinated by the many aspects of history, nature and archeology. Here environment blends with the wine production, characterized by an extended quantity of native vines, which grow on a terroir which is being studied since it is one of the most interesting of the island.
And here Stefania Lena, treasuring the experience obtained in Abbazia Santa Anastasia with her father Francesco, decided to start her experimentation activity. More than 30 hectares of vineyards rented from different farmers. “Thanks to this system we managed to choose the best terroirs, avoiding initial costs”, she explained, “moreover we will be producing something with a constant quality, because we think about the processing, cultivation and quantity”.
The top product of Fatascià is Almanera, monovarietal Nero D’Avola that won in 2004 the three glasses of the Guida dei Vini D’Italia by Gambero Rosso and Slow Food. But this native vine is also proposed in a blended version at 50% with the Cabernet franc to create the Rosso del Presidente, dedicated to the chef Giuseppe Carollo. “It is difficult to obtain a blend with these vines, because they both have a strong character and if they’re not well processed they can give bad results”, he confessed. A bet that Fatascià managed to win.
