It's going to be another hard day in Sicily. No agreement was reached in talks between the Pitchworks movement and the president of Sicily Raffaele Lombardo Thursday. The five-day strike against high fuel price that is blocking main roads all over the island will last until Friday night.
Protesters are blocking all deliveries to restaurants and supermarkets causing food shortages, while shops are shutting down. Gas stations ran out of fuel Wednesday. Totally panicked people formed long, chaotic lines for gas in the previous days. All economy has been stopped while most people can't reach their workplaces without their cars because of the very inadequate system of Sicilian public transports.
Despite the troubles it is causing, the protest is generally supported by population. The movement has been accused of neo-fascist and mafia infiltrations, police is investigating. Meanwhile thousands of ordinary Sicilians joined the Pitchforks. On Wednesday, both right and left winged workers, students and unemployed people took the streets together with truckers, drivers, farmers and fishermen in protest against austerity measures and fuel price. The strike started Monday and it is slowly extending to other Italian regions.
