Sicilian workers have started a protest that evokes the bloody insurrection of the Sicilian Vespers against Charles of Anjou in 1282. Protesters, who call themselves “the pitchforks”, demonstrate against high fuel price and have been blocking highways causing fuel and food shortages in about all cities and towns on the island.
On Wednesday, both right and left winged workers, students and unemployed people joined hundreds of truckers, drivers, farmers and fishermen in protest against austerity measures and high fuel prices. “Sicilians pay more taxes on fuel than anyone else in Italy" – says Roberto La Rosa - "Despite the many petroleum refineries on the island, oil companies pay very low taxes compared to the environmental impact their business cause".
this is not a protest against fuel price at all.
This is a cry of pain of thousand of families that have no bread for their children. people over there are claiming better conditions, public services, infrastructures, employment, good politics.
We are at the terminus, afterward will be the vesper. Please do not leave them alone.
