In a note from Dia, deposited in the appeal trial against the Pdl senator Marcello Dell’Utri, Mafia informant Gaspare Spatuzza recalled an episode that occurred at the beginning of the 1990s, stating that he saw the actual president of the Italian Upper Chamber, Renato Schifani, meeting the boss Filippo Graviano.
The incident refers to the period in which Schifani was a lawyer and Graviano still wasn’t in hiding. Schifani assisted Giuseppe Cosenza, suspect of Mafia and whose assets were seized and then confiscated in 1992, and was kept under surveillance for three years. In the note of last 26th of October, the Dia of Florence reconstructed the meetings that took place at the Valtras, that belonged to Cosenza. The policemen verified that Cosenza owned the company, was a previous offender and was “publicly linked to the Graviano brothers”. Many Mafia informants had talked about him, but he has never been sentenced for Mafia or murder. The defender in the civil trials still hasn’t been verified.
“I looked back into in my memory – said Spatuzza – and tried to understand Filippo Graviano’s relationship with Milan. Sometimes Filippo Graviano used the company Valtras, where I worked, as a meeting place. But there was also a kitchen warehouse owned by Pippo Cosenza, where the meeting also took place. I remember I saw more than onece a person I was told was Cosenza’s lawyer (Schifani, editor’s note).
